Chargers Score 19 Straight to Open 2nd Half in Comeback Victory

The Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team opened the second half on a huge run as it rallied to beat Waubonsee 55-38 on Saturday afternoon at John M. Lewis Gymnasium.
The Chargers (2-1) trailed 26-19 at halftime but scored the first 19 points of the third quarter while holding the Chiefs (0-3) scoreless for more than 8 minutes. Sandburg went on to outscore Waubonsee 36-12 in the second half.
Freshman forward Kennedy Jackson (Peoria, Ill./Limestone), who finished with 12 points, opened the run with back-to-back baskets. Freshman guard Hailey Lovetinksy (Overland Park, Kan./Spring Hill) scored eight points in the stretch on her way to a game-high 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting. She hit 3 of 4 from 3-point range.
Sophomore guard Danayzia Stuckey (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) added 14 points and had five of the Chargers’ 19 steals in the contest. Sophomore guard Katie Droste (Biggsville, Ill./West Central) had a team-leading six pilfers.
Freshman forward Yvonne Mixon (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) came off the bench to grab a game-best 11 rebounds, with five of those coming on the offensive glass.
Hayley Farren and Kayla Battle each scored 10 to lead the Chiefs, who committed 30 turnovers and hit 1 of 11 3-point attempts.
Sandburg will travel to face Southeastern (Iowa) at 6 p.m. Monday before returning home Wednesday to face Milwaukee Area Tech at 5 p.m. in the first game of a men’s-women’s doubleheader.
